866 This story was riveting and I've come to expect nothing less of the author. It covers centuries of deception, the shattering of identities, the paradox of time and unlikely alliances. It is also a story of sheer perseverance, of fierce loyalties and especially about the singularly snarky stubbornness that is Jess Ballard. It absolutely defines Jess for her to rush blindly ahead with a crazy plan, dragging everyone (including the reader) along with her, with the potential for disaster on every side. Her beliefs in the Durupinen, in her sister and even in the three people who are destined to receive her momentous message are overturned during her desperate journey to repair what should have been a temporary solution to a perilous situation. Jess grows up a little more when she comes to the realization that putting aside bitter hatred is the only way to move forward. 'This was bigger than either of us now. How we felt about each other, what had passed between us - all that was gone now, swept up in the current of this new storm. We would have to weather it together, or not at all.' There were moments of typically Jess humor, of course, such as, 'I might be exhausted and scared and confused, but that was no reason to waste an opportunity to be petty.'I really admire this author's polished delivery. So many authors nowadays seem to have a mediocre knowledge of grammar and spelling and those errors can toss a reader right out of an otherwise fascinating world. I also have to say that it was great to see so many of the characters again and discover a few new ones along the way. If you've been captivated by the story so far, this is an epic conclusion, and I hope we'll see more of the Durupinen in the future.
